Our Story

25 Years of Himalayan Excellence

Hiking in Himalaya was born on a rocky trail in 1999, when Saroj Tamang — a third-generation Sherpa from the Solu-Khumbu region — led his first group of eight trekkers to Everest Base Camp. What started as a one-man guiding operation out of a rented desk in Thamel has grown into Nepal's most trusted boutique trekking company, while remaining exactly that: boutique.

We've never chased volume. Every group we take into the mountains is small, personally guided by someone who knows that trail — its rhythms, its microweather, its teahouse families — the way you know your own neighbourhood. Saroj still leads expeditions himself. That hasn't changed in 25 years.

Our values are simple: look after the people in our care, look after the mountain communities who host them, and leave every trail in better shape than we found it. We reinvest a portion of every trek into local school infrastructure, porter welfare funds, and trail maintenance partnerships with the National Trust for Nature Conservation.

What Drives Us

Our Values

Three commitments that shape every decision we make, from how we price a trek to how we hire a porter.

Community First

We hire locally — guides, porters, cooks, and drivers all from the communities our treks pass through. A share of every booking funds village school repairs, library books, and porter welfare programmes. We believe the mountains belong to the people who live on them.

Low-Impact Trekking

We follow strict Leave No Trace principles on every trail. Group sizes are capped at 12. We carry out all non-biodegradable waste, use biodegradable soap, and partner with KEEP to keep Himalayan ecosystems intact for future generations of trekkers.

Transparent Pricing

Every quote we send is all-inclusive — permits, accommodation, meals, porter wages, guide fees, and emergency insurance. No hidden service charges, no surprise airport transfer fees, no extra costs on the mountain. What we quote is what you pay.

The People Behind Your Trek

Meet the Team

Our guides don't just know the trails — they grew up on them. Every leader on our team is a native Nepali with at least a decade of high-altitude experience.

ST
Saroj Tamang
Founder & Head Guide

IFMGA-certified mountain guide and third-generation Sherpa with 25+ years leading expeditions across every major Himalayan range. Saroj summited Everest in 2003 and has since guided over 600 trekking groups to Everest Base Camp alone. He still leads select expeditions personally each season.

PS
Pemba Sherpa
Senior Trek Leader

Two-time Everest summiteer and 15-year specialist on the Khumbu trail. Pemba knows every teahouse family between Lukla and Base Camp and has guided over 400 EBC groups. He carries advanced wilderness first aid certification and speaks English, Nepali, and Sherpa fluently.

DL
Dawa Lama
Operations Manager

Ten years building the logistics engine behind every trek we run. Dawa handles all trekking permits, TIMS cards, national park passes, domestic flights, and ground transport — seamlessly and well ahead of your arrival. If there's a bureaucratic mountain to climb, Dawa has already been there.

ST
Sita Thapa
Client Relations

Nine years as the first voice you hear when you contact us. Sita coordinates pre-trek consultations, custom itinerary planning, and post-trek feedback across three languages — English, German, and French. She's the reason so many of our bookings come from returning clients and word-of-mouth referrals.

What Trekkers Say

Stories from the Trail

"Saroj didn't just guide us to Base Camp — he explained the geology, the culture, the history of every village we passed through. We came home knowing Nepal, not just having ticked a destination off a bucket list. Absolutely no comparison with the big group operators."

Germany · EBC Trek 2025

"I'd trekked before with larger companies and always felt like a number. With Hiking in Himalaya I felt like family. Pemba knew when I was struggling before I said a word. The whole experience — from Sita's pre-trip emails to the farewell dinner in Namche — was exceptional."

Sophie Bertrand
France · Annapurna Circuit 2025

"The transparency in pricing set them apart from the moment I received the first quote. No hidden costs, no pressure, no upsells. Dawa handled our permits and logistics with zero friction. I've already booked the Manaslu Circuit for next autumn."
